Kim Kardashian Gets a Custom Painted Hermès HAC Bag from Kanye West

Kim Kardashian Hermes HAC Painted

The web is a buzz over Kim Kardashian’s Christmas gift from her fiance Kanye West. Kim Kardashian proudly showed off her bag on Instagram, which looks to be an older Hermes HAC, that Kanye West had painted by renowned artist George Condo, an American contemporary visual artist. Kanye first worked with artist George Condo in 2010 for a series of paintings for West’s album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The Hermes Bag has been covered on the front with four people, mostly nude and one with a green monster face.

Many find the painting to be crass for the new mom but this painting is the kind of work George Condo is known for. In fact, Condo has created similar pieces of art before. What stands out to me is that many sources have called this bag an Hermes Birkin when it is actually an Hermès HAC, Haut à Courroies. The HAC is taller than the Birkin with shorter straps and was first designed in the 1800′s to transport horse riding gear. This exact bag may be one that the Kardashian Klan owned before Kanye commissioned the work, actually it could be this one Kanye was seen carrying before. It looks to be a 50cm HAC, which means it will be very heavy and as you can see in the photos, very large.

Kim doesn’t seem to take anything the haters have said to heart, as she was spotted proudly carrying this bag just a couple days after Christmas. This isn’t the first Hermès bag we’ve seen altered, Nicola Formichetti took to his Birkin as did Lady Gaga, once with a marker and another time with studs.

What do you think of Kim’s newest gift from Kanye?

Nene Leakes Dines in NYC with Hermes and a Fellow Housewife

Nene Leakes Hermes Birkin

Nene Leakes was recently spotted dining at Nello (a restaurant that is somewhat notorious for being ridiculously expensive and over-the-top, even by NYC standards) with husband Gregg and fellow Housewife (of the NY variety) Sonja Morgan. Her bag is a bright blue Hermes Birkin, natch. Nene loves her Birkins, as do all Real Housewives and “Bravolebrities” – you can see for yourself in our special homage to Bravo-endorsed excess, “The Many Bags of Bravolebrities.”

Nene actually announced this week that her next venture will be her own eponymous clothing line. No word yet on where Nene-designed duds will be sold. Nene certainly loves dropping serious cash at Barneys and all the highest of high end department stores, but it wouldn’t be at all surprising if her line landed somewhere a little more down-to-Earth, like the majority of celebrity fashion lines.

Kim Kardashian Has a Major New Hermes Birkin on Her Arm

Kim Kardashian Hermes Himalayan Crocodile Birkin Bag

Kim Kardashian was recently mobbed by paps while leaving lunch at The Ivy in LA – as you can see, she’s clutching a relatively teensy 30cm Hermes Himalayan Crocodile Birkin, which is an extremely rare Hermes bag. Kim has a special talent for acquiring the rarest of Birkins, of course, and then cycling a few out of her wardrobe by selling them at auction at a later date). You can peruse her extensive collection of Birkins and other Kanye West-approved handbags in “The Many (Many) Bags of Kim Kardashian.”

The name “Himalayan” actually refers to the color of the Birkin, not the region from which the crocodile comes from – which, yes, is needlessly confusing because Himalayan crocs sound like they could be a real thing, but are not. Kim’s bag is actually made from the hide of a Niloticus croc, just like a lot of other Hermes bags. What makes this bag rare (and notably more expensive than other croc Birkins) is that the tanning process necessary to achieve this finish is particularly delicate. Reportedly, Hermes has no plans to keep producing the Himalayan Croc Birkin, so maybe this bag will be the next to appear on the auction block?

Hermes 2014 Price Increase Set for Next Week

Hermes Birkin Bags

January is a tough month. It’s cold, it’s dark, you have the whole post-holiday letdown thing going on. If you’re a luxury consumer, you also have to deal with the fact that many brands use the post-holiday lull to sneak in a little annual price increase. In the immediate future, Hermes is the price increase you need to worry about, according to shopping site Mizhattan.

Mizhattan is known for getting this kind of sneaky info on price increases, sample sales and other hush-hush Manhattan retail machinations, and her sources indicate that, starting late next week, Hermes customers can expect storewide prices to increase anywhere from 6% to 10%, depending on the product category. Her source indicates that handbags will be the most affected by the higher prices, and we’re taking that to mean that accessories and leather goods will be closer to the 10% end of the increase spectrum.

The full transition to new price levels should be complete by the end of the month, so if you’ve got a purchase in mind, you might want to hightail it to your local Hermes boutique after work tonight. A 10% price increase would mean approximately an extra $1,000 on the price tags of entry-level leather Birkins and 3,800 extra dollars on the crocodile bag that Hermes currently has for sale on its website.

Hermes, of course, is at the tip-top tier of the luxury handbag market; their customers aren’t price-conscious to begin with, and for many, the extreme dollar amounts are a big part of company’s lure of exclusivity. 10% is a pretty hefty lift, but if you’re a company that does a turn-away business with $10,000 handbags, changing the price to $11,000 probably isn’t going to make that big a difference to those who buy them. There’s likely a price tipping point for Hermes out there somewhere, but I’d be surprised if this is it.

Tamara Ecclestone Carries Hermes to Shop at Hermes

Tamara Ecclestone carries an Hermes So Black Alligator Birkin Bag (5)

Heiress Tamara Ecclestone recently paid a visit to Hermes Madison Avenue in NYC with her new husband Jay Rutland. She carried an Hermes So Black Alligator Birkin Bag just for the occasion. We actually saw Tamara in NYC with this super rare, exclusive Hermes bag around this exact same time last year. This is the sort of limited edition Hermes bag you’ll only see in the hands of heiresses, top-tier actresses, Kardashians and the like. For Hermes fans, it’s kind of the Holy Grail.

It’s extremely hard to tell, but Tamara is actually four and a half months pregnant in this photo. (Congrats, tiny fetus, you’re already a billionaire!) Bizarrely enough, when we saw Tamara with this bag last year, she hadn’t even met Jay. They met in January, became engaged in February, wed in a $7 million celebration on the French Riviera in June and announced their happy news in October.

Hermes Now Offering $38,000 Crocodile Bag for Sale on Its Website

Hermes Double Sens Croco Chiffon Tote

On Friday, something interesting was brought to our attention on Twitter – Hermes now has one very particular exotic bag for sale on its website. In our memory, as well as our tipster’s, this is the first time exotic bags have been so widely accessible from the notoriously insular brand, and the Hermes Double Sens Croco Tote it may be an indicator of the inevitable future of luxury shopping.

Hermes has an interesting product category on its website called “Surprise!” that is updated periodically with new pieces that range from breathtaking to oddball. It currently contains a marble horse-head sculpture that retails for over $7,000 and a crocodile mini saddle that will cost you in excess of 20 Gs. Most interesting to us, though, is this simple little reversible tote, covered on one side by either Porosus crocodile or Mississippiensis alligator, depending on the size you choose.

Hermes exotics are beyond legendary, and while the crocodile version of this bag doesn’t quite crack the ceiling to make it the most expensive exotic bag on the Internet (the alligator version, which is smaller, will set you back $26,900 to the larger crocodile’s $38,000), the presence of this one for sale online, directly from the brand, represents another step forward in the luxury business’ tentative embrace of online shopping. With Forbes reporting that online sales saw a significant spike while brick-and-mortar sales lagged this holiday season, the writing may be on the wall for even the most staid of designer brands.

The iconic French design house has long offered a limited selection of its products for sale on its website, but like Louis Vuitton, Hermes has always kept the exclusive pieces off the Internet. Although this bag’s online presence is likely a result of its basic design, and products in the “Surprise!” section generally don’t stick around for long, that Hermes would offer a piece from its most exclusive product category on its website says a lot about where the industry is headed.

Who Wore It Better: Kim Kardashian or Victoria Beckham?

Kim Kardashian Victoria Beckham Himalayan Crocodile Birkin Bag

Earlier this week, Kim Kardashian caused a bit of a stir when she debuted a brand new (to her collection, at least), super rare, incredibly expensive Hermes Himalayan Crocodile Birkin that might be beautiful enough to wipe that George Condo painted HAC out of some (not all) Hermes lovers’ minds. A simple Google search of “Hermes Himalayan Croc Birkin” will show you which bag-loving celeb got her hands on the bag first, though – none other than Victoria Beckham, the original celebrity Hermes fanatic.

Beckham was the first star to bring this very exclusive bag to the attention of people beyond Hermes consumer circles, and it seems like Kim would be wise to try emulating Beckham’s gradual, years-long transition from tabloid fodder to fashion industry darling. The Victoria Beckham who once wore leather chaps in public seems like a distant memory now, but she used to be something of a joke to designers who feared that Beckham would devalue their brand image if she was spotted wearing their clothes. Victoria clearly wanted very badly to be accepted by an industry that was hostile to her, though, and she made it so by cleaning up her wardrobe, refining her personal style and demonstrating a commitment to fashion done correctly with her eponymous line.

As has been mentioned at Fashionista and elsewhere, Kim Kardashian is currently traversing a similar road, but her destination is still a bit unclear. If she can get her reality show off the air and continue to clean up her wardrobe (her coat game has been flawless lately and no one will tell me otherwise), then she might have a fighting chance. She’s already made a vast style improvement in the span of just a couple of years, and if you don’t believe me, we’ve got a place where you can check out some of her older outfits. Like Victoria, Kim is also wealthy far beyond the spoils of her day-to-day gig, which comes in handy when trying to redecorate your entire life.

For right now, though, we’re just judging what we see below. Who did a better job making her Himalayan Croc Birkin look like all of the thousands of dollars its worth? I’m on Kim K’s side, if only because she so clearly chose the outfit to accent her new bag, and who among us hasn’t done that at least once? (Or every time we get a new bag?)
