The web is a buzz over Kim Kardashian’s Christmas gift from her fiance Kanye West. Kim Kardashian proudly showed off her bag on Instagram, which looks to be an older Hermes HAC, that Kanye West had painted by renowned artist George Condo, an American contemporary visual artist. Kanye first worked with artist George Condo in 2010 for a series of paintings for West’s album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The Hermes Bag has been covered on the front with four people, mostly nude and one with a green monster face.
Many find the painting to be crass for the new mom but this painting is the kind of work George Condo is known for. In fact, Condo has created similar pieces of art before. What stands out to me is that many sources have called this bag an Hermes Birkin when it is actually an Hermès HAC, Haut à Courroies. The HAC is taller than the Birkin with shorter straps and was first designed in the 1800′s to transport horse riding gear. This exact bag may be one that the Kardashian Klan owned before Kanye commissioned the work, actually it could be this one Kanye was seen carrying before. It looks to be a 50cm HAC, which means it will be very heavy and as you can see in the photos, very large.
Kim doesn’t seem to take anything the haters have said to heart, as she was spotted proudly carrying this bag just a couple days after Christmas. This isn’t the first Hermès bag we’ve seen altered, Nicola Formichetti took to his Birkin as did Lady Gaga, once with a marker and another time with studs.
What do you think of Kim’s newest gift from Kanye?

Kim Kardashian was recently mobbed by paps while leaving lunch at The Ivy in LA – as you can see, she’s clutching a relatively teensy 30cm Hermes Himalayan Crocodile Birkin, which is an extremely rare Hermes bag. Kim has a special talent for acquiring the rarest of Birkins, of course, and then cycling a few out of her wardrobe by selling them at auction at a later date). You can peruse her extensive collection of Birkins and other Kanye West-approved handbags in “The Many (Many) Bags of Kim Kardashian.”
The name “Himalayan” actually refers to the color of the Birkin, not the region from which the crocodile comes from – which, yes, is needlessly confusing because Himalayan crocs sound like they could be a real thing, but are not. Kim’s bag is actually made from the hide of a Niloticus croc, just like a lot of other Hermes bags. What makes this bag rare (and notably more expensive than other croc Birkins) is that the tanning process necessary to achieve this finish is particularly delicate. Reportedly, Hermes has no plans to keep producing the Himalayan Croc Birkin, so maybe this bag will be the next to appear on the auction block?

Earlier this week, Kim Kardashian caused a bit of a stir when she debuted a brand new (to her collection, at least), super rare, incredibly expensive Hermes Himalayan Crocodile Birkin that might be beautiful enough to wipe that George Condo painted HAC out of some (not all) Hermes lovers’ minds. A simple Google search of “Hermes Himalayan Croc Birkin” will show you which bag-loving celeb got her hands on the bag first, though – none other than Victoria Beckham, the original celebrity Hermes fanatic.
Beckham was the first star to bring this very exclusive bag to the attention of people beyond Hermes consumer circles, and it seems like Kim would be wise to try emulating Beckham’s gradual, years-long transition from tabloid fodder to fashion industry darling. The Victoria Beckham who once wore leather chaps in public seems like a distant memory now, but she used to be something of a joke to designers who feared that Beckham would devalue their brand image if she was spotted wearing their clothes. Victoria clearly wanted very badly to be accepted by an industry that was hostile to her, though, and she made it so by cleaning up her wardrobe, refining her personal style and demonstrating a commitment to fashion done correctly with her eponymous line.
As has been mentioned at Fashionista and elsewhere, Kim Kardashian is currently traversing a similar road, but her destination is still a bit unclear. If she can get her reality show off the air and continue to clean up her wardrobe (her coat game has been flawless lately and no one will tell me otherwise), then she might have a fighting chance. She’s already made a vast style improvement in the span of just a couple of years, and if you don’t believe me, we’ve got a place where you can check out some of her older outfits. Like Victoria, Kim is also wealthy far beyond the spoils of her day-to-day gig, which comes in handy when trying to redecorate your entire life.
For right now, though, we’re just judging what we see below. Who did a better job making her Himalayan Croc Birkin look like all of the thousands of dollars its worth? I’m on Kim K’s side, if only because she so clearly chose the outfit to accent her new bag, and who among us hasn’t done that at least once? (Or every time we get a new bag?)
